Colts’ Daniel Jones has chance to replace a strikingly familiar QB

Daniel Jones is the leader in the clubhouse in the Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback competition.

That’s pretty much true by default given the fact that Anthony Richardson is injured, allowing Jones to get all the major reps.

“Daniel Jones has had a really nice spring, by all accounts, in picking up Shane Steichen’s offense in Indy,” SI’s Albert Breer wrote. “Even if Anthony Richardson is cleared for the start of training camp, he may be chasing Jones for the Colts’ starting job.”

The crazy part about this, though, is that Jones is replacing a guy who features a lot of the same narratives as a younger Jones.

Both were top-10 picks. Richardson was a little more certain to go in that range, while Jones felt to some like a slight reach.

Both were raw when they were chosen so high, though, not polished passers but great athletes with high potential.

Jones struggled with consistency throughout his time with the Giants. That’s certainly the main issue for Richardson in Indy besides health. He threw for a whopping 47.7% completion percentage in 2024. That’s on the QB more than it is the guys around him.

The Giants had a tough time replacing Jones, although they tried.

The Colts, to potentially replace Richardson, brought in a guy in Jones who once dealt with a lot of the same flaws.

They’ll have to hope he grew out of them, or this is a competition that is going nowhere good.
