The Indianapolis Colts have spent the early portion of the offseason improving their secondary with some surprisingly aggressive moves.
Adding safety Cam Bynum and cornerback Charvarius Ward to the secondary should help solve several issues that have hampered the defense over the last few seasons. Even with those additions, the Colts could still be looking to add talent and depth to the cornerback room during the 2025 NFL Draft.
In naming the best fits for the top defensive backs in the upcoming class, Nic Bodiford of Pro Football Focus believes the Colts and Seattle Seahawks are the top landing spots for Colorado superstar Travis Hunter.
“Both Indianapolis (No. 14 overall pick) and Seattle (No. 18 overall pick) must trade up for the right to draft Hunter. Indianapolis, possessing only the standard seven NFL draft picks allotted to them, may have a more difficult time doing so,” Bodiford wrote. “Hunter brings elite offensive and defensive traits, particularly when lined up on the perimeter. He is a perfect fit for Indianapolis and Seattle.”
Adding a talent like Hunter is probably not in the cards for the Colts. Though anything can happen in the NFL, it would take an incredibly massive haul for Indy to trade up into the top four. Even with general manager Chris Ballard maintaining a more aggressive stance this offseason, this would be an unprecedented move during his tenure.
With that said, Hunter would be an incredible addition to the Colts roster. The Heisman Award winner would immediately boost the cornerback and wide receiver positions, giving Indy a cornerstone piece at both spots.
As a wide receiver in 2024, Hunter recorded 96 receptions for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns. Defensively, he had 36 tackles (25 solo), four interceptions and 11 passes defensed while allowing a 38.8 passer rating against, according to Pro Football Focus.
This move would certainly send shockwaves through the NFL as Indy would immediately become a contender to win the AFC South and end their four-year playoff drought.
