Club Brugge’s classy gesture to Marseille fans backfires immediately after dramatic Champions League finish

CLUB BRUGGE congratulated Marseille on their Champions League qualification – only for the French side to be knocked out.

The French side were thrashed 3-0 on a wild final night of the group stage.

But when the final whistle went in Belgium they were still clinging onto 24th place in the table – the final play-off round spot.

And as players shook hands on the pitch, Brugge, who had also secured their spot, shared a message on their scoreboard that read: “Congratulations for qualifying Marseille”.

Unfortunately for Marseille they jumped the gun.

That’s because there was a major sting in the table in the only game still playing.

Benfica were 3-2 up against nine-man Real Madrid deep into injury time.

But Jose Mourinho’s side still needed one more goal to leapfrog Marseille on goal difference and steal their spot.

And in stunning scenes goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin leapt to head in and send fans across the continent wild.

That left Mason Greenwood and his Marseille team-mates heartbroken.

And fans couldn’t believe what they had watched

One wrote: “That’s brilliant.”

Another added: “Couldn’t have happened to a nicer team.”

A third wrote: “Football won.”

And another commented: “Insert Curb your Enthusiasm theme.”

Real Madrid’s late concession saw them drop out of the top eight, therefore missing out on automatic qualification.

And in a strange quirk of fate they could meet Jose Mourinho’s Benfica in the play-offs, or Bodo/Glimt.
