ASTON VILLA fought into a strong position after beating a stubborn Club Brugge 3-1 in the Champions League.

The West Midlands outfit faced Brugge in Belgium as they looked to put a marker down in the first leg of the round of 16.

The match got off to a frantic pace and in no time Villa were ahead thanks to a classy strike from Leon Bailey.

However, the lead lasted just nine minutes as the hosts levelled through Maxim De Cuyper in the 12th minute.

The second half saw both teams desperate for the lead as a top save from former Liverpool stopper Simon Mignolet denied Marco Asensio.

At the other end, a Hans Vanaken header was just stopped from finding the net by the lightest of touches from Tyrone Mings.

Villa restored their lead in the 83rd minute as Brandon Mechele turned a cross from Morgan Rogers into his own net.

Matty Cash was then brought down in the box two minutes later and Asensio converted from the spot to make sure of the win.
