Claress Shields’ Fractured Finger Cannot Erase Scott Mismatch

Claressa Shields fighting with a fractured finger sounds heroic until Kaye Scott’s disadvantages are placed beside it. Shields was 31, while Scott was 42 and had completed only seven professional bouts.

Ring Magazine revealed that Shields fractured the finger after falling during training two weeks before Saturday’s fight in Atlanta. She continued with the bout and stopped Scott in round six to capture the WBA and WBC middleweight titles.

The injury required toughness, but sympathy is difficult when Scott faced a far greater collection of obstacles. She brought a 5-1-1 record into the ring against a two-time Olympic gold medalist and five-division champion who had competed at the highest level for nearly a decade.

Shields possessed an 11-year youth advantage, superior hand speed and far more experience against world-class opposition. The injury reduced one of those edges. It did not make the contest remotely balanced.

Scott’s championship belts could not compensate for her limited professional background. Her age and lack of speed left her vulnerable once Shields increased the pace. Scott eventually lost the ability to defend herself against the combinations coming from the younger fighter, prompting her corner to rescue her in the sixth.

Claressa also cut 38 pounds during a disciplined 14-week camp. That required considerable effort, but the weight reduction and injured finger were challenges accepted by Shields and her team. Scott had to overcome physical decline, limited professional experience, and a huge difference in overall ability.

T-Rex Shields deserves credit for continuing without postponing the event. The post-fight disclosure should not elevate a one-sided matchup into a legendary triumph.

The fractured finger made the fight harder for Shields. Scott still faced the much harder task from the opening bell.
