The NFL Draft is right around the corner and the Chiefs have many needs following their humiliating Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Last season the Chiefs’ wide receiver corps was a mess, to say the least. Rashee Rice started off strong but suffered a season-ending injury. Xavier Worthy did not develop into a consistent threat until late in the year. The team tried trading for DeAndre Hopkins, but he did not provide the spark they hoped for. With Hopkins and Mecole Hardman both leaving in free agency, the Chiefs could target a wide receiver early in the draft.
FanSided’s Lou Scataglia predicted the Chiefs would draft University of Texas wide receiver Isaiah Bond in the second round of the draft. Bond does not have the best stats, but has the ability to develop into an impactful player.
Last season he had 34 receptions, 548 receiving yards and five receiving touchdowns. He made some impact in the ground game as well. He had four carries for 98 yards and a touchdown. NFL Analyst Lance Zierlein thinks Bond has the traits to succeed in the NFL and was underused at Texas.
“Fluid, fast and untapped,” Zierlein wrote of Bond. “Bond played decoy for the betterment of Texas’ offense but clearly has the talent to take on a more focused, productive role. He’s a capable route-runner, has good hands and can play wide or from the slot. An offense should feed him a heavier diet of shallow crossers, deep digs and quick-game throws, allowing him to make magic with the ball in his hands and add to their chunk play total. He’s tough but can struggle on combat catches and against contact-oriented coverage. Bond is an explosive athlete with above-average skill. He simply needs more targets to reach his potential. He’s well-suited to the NFL game and could become a very good pro within his first three seasons.”
Worthy ended the season with a two-touchdown performance in the Super Bowl. If he carries that into next season alongside a healthy Rashee Rice the Chiefs could be in a good spot. Bond could join them as the third option for Patrick Mahomes.
