Chelsea legend hints at shock move into management to follow in footsteps of former team-mate Frank Lampard

FORMER Chelsea star Joe Cole in considering a move into management – but he is not ready to rush his first job.

The ex-England star is aiming to follow in the footsteps of his former team-mate Frank Lampard, who is in charge of Coventry City.

Cole has limited coaching experience but did spend time with the Brentford academy last season.

He is open to pursuing a career path in coaching but is cautious about taking a job that may not be suitable.

Asked if he would want to be a manager, Cole told talkSPORT: “Yeah, absolutely. I’m coaching a little bit.

“I was at Brentford last year with the young lads, just keeping my eye in and coaching.

“I’m going to start again soon when things settle down. It’s something I’ve got my eye on at some point. It’s difficult, though.

“You don’t want to take a job that you don’t think is right for you at the time. There are lots of decent jobs, but you want a good job with an opportunity to do well.

“Listen, I won’t be putting my CV in Real Madrid any time soon. You’ve got to start somewhere and there’s different ways to do it.”

Cole, 43, has mostly worked as a pundit on TNT Sports since hanging up his boots in 2018.

He is a regular on their European football coverage, particularly the Europa League, but he is intrigued at the prospect of following his former team-mates into the “mad world” of football management.

Cole continued: “It’s such a mad world. I’ve got friends coaching all over and you speak to them, they’re always four or five games away from the sack at any level.

“Then there’s interference from the owners and directors of football, all these other things now where so much of what you control on the football pitch isn’t in your hands.

“What job would you take on where they’d want you to do a job but you aren’t really in control of it and you’re going to get judged every Saturday?

“It’s a mad job to do. The only thing I’d say is if I did a job, I’d like to have an opportunity and like to think I have full control of tactics and a bit of a relationship with the owner so you have time to work with things.

“If that was the case, I’d do it tomorrow. But I don’t know if I’m waiting for something that’s not possible.”
