Chelsea fans turn on Enzo Maresca for ‘baffling’ substitutions in Champions League defeat to Serie A strugglers Atalanta

CHELSEA fans were left furious with Enzo Maresca after the club suffered a shock Champions League defeat to Atalanta.

The Blues got off to a flying start when Joao Pedro broke the deadlock in the first half.

But things took a turn after the break when former West Ham striker Gianluca Scamacca levelled things up.

Atalanta then turned the match on its head completely when Charles De Ketelaere scored a late winner to give them all three points.

Chelsea fans were livid at full-time and directed their anger at Maresca for his underwhelming in-game management.

The Italian put three defenders on in the second half, with Malo Gusto replacing midfielder Enzo Fernandez and Trevoh Chalobah making way for Wesley Fofana.

Chelsea were dealt an injury blow late in the game when Fofana was forced off again after getting a boot to the face.

He was then replaced by Tosin Adarabioyo with just under 15 minutes left to play.

The only attacking substitution saw Alejandro Garnacho replace Pedro Neto on the right wing.

Fans were not happy with the changes from Maresca, with one person taking to social media to write: “Losing to 12th in Serie A, 18th in the PL and drawing to 12th in the PL in the space of a week a dire look for Maresca and Co.”

Another said: “This game is all on Maresca. There is absolutely no reason to have two fullbacks in midfield, six defenders on the pitch when you have Santos and Estevão on the bench. Attacking, creativity & defensive output has fallen off a cliff.”

A third commented: “Maresca has acted cowardly tonight, Chelsea managers have been sacked for less.”

A fourth wrote: “This was all on Maresca today. 7 defenders and this is the outcome. Tactics were horrendous. The subs??? No words.”

Another added: “Enzo Maresca has got the in-game management all wrong tonight. Baffling substitutions and tactical profiling. This second half has been so poor.”

While another simply said: “All Maresca’s fault sadly.”

The result left Chelsea 11th in the league phase table with two games left to play.

They next face Everton at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
