Charles Cross makes announcement about Seahawks future amid extension uncertainty

The Seattle Seahawks are facing a big decision when it comes to 2022 first-round pick and left tackle Charles Cross.

After picking up his fifth-year option this offseason, the Seahawks now have to make a decision about whether or not to extend Cross beyond 2026, which is now the final year of his rookie contract.

Cross’ play wasn’t great over his first two years in the NFL, but he did enjoy a much better showing in 2024, which was considered a breakout year for him.

While he did give up six sacks and 47 total pressures, Cross earned very good run-blocking and pass-blocking grades from Pro Football Focus last season (77.9 and 81.3, respectively).

As questions remain about his future with the team, Cross made it quite clear he wants to stay in Seattle for the long haul.

“I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else but Seattle,” Cross at minicamp on Wednesday, per The Athletic’s Shawn-Michael Dugar. “I love the fans here. I love the team. One of the greatest organizations in the NFL. I like it here a lot.”

There are arguments both for and against Cross getting an extension sooner than later.

Against: Seattle should wait and see if Cross can take another step forward in 2025 before investing significant money. The Seahawks actually have the option to wait two full seasons with him being under contract through 2026.

For: The longer Seattle waits, the more expensive Cross could become. If he has an elite season in 2025, Cross will command top-of-the-market money, and he could possibly hold out if he doesn’t get it.

Good left tackles are very hard to find in the NFL, which only adds to Cross’ value. If the Seahawks can find a middle ground with their starting left tackle, an extension sooner rather than later would be the best move.
