The Los Angeles Chargers have been chosen for the annual Hall of Fame Game to kick off the 2025 preseason. The game, which takes place from the home of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, dates back to 1962.
The game will take place on July 31and the Chargers will face the Detroit Lions. The game usually features at least one team with a player, coach or executive being enshrined in that year’s class and the Chargers will have legendary tight end Antonio Gates inducted into Canton that weekend.
“This game features two teams that can be considered legitimate contenders to reach Super Bowl LX next February. For them to face each other right out of the gate in Canton, Ohio, should create a dynamic opening to another spectacular NFL season”, said Jim Porter, president and CEO of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
The Chargers have appeared in the Hall of Fame Game just twice in their history, the last time coming in 1994. In their first appearance, against the Green Bay Packers in 1980, the game ended in the only scoreless tie in the history of the Hall of Fame Game.
On July 30, 1994, the Chargers faced the Atlanta Falcons and lost the game 21-17.
The Chargers and Lions will each get one extra preseason game this season, meaning they will each play four games as opposed to the three games that all other teams will play. It was announced during the 2025 NFL Draft that this year’s entire schedule will be revealed on Wednesday, May 14.
