The Los Angeles Chargers will officially be part of the NFL International Series in 2025 as the league announced on Wednesday morning that the team will open the season in Sao Paulo, Brazil in Week 1. It will be the second year in a row the league kicks off in Brazil as the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers had the honor this past season.
The Chargers will play an international game for the first time since November 2019 when they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in a game played in Mexico. The Chargers have a 1-2 all-time record in international games.
The league now just needs to give the Chargers an opponent. The Chargers will be considered the home team for the game, meaning their opponent will come from this list:
Denver
Kansas City
Las Vegas
Houston
Indianapolis
Philadelphia
Washington
Pittsburgh
Minnesota
By process of elimination, something Jason Reed of Bolt Beat detailed nicely here, the Houston Texans stand out as a potential opponent. It would be a rematch of this year’s Wild Card round, a 32-12 Texans win, and a good way to start the season.
The league has also already announced that Pittsburgh will host a game in Dublin, Ireland and Miami will host a game in Madrid, Spain. In addition to that, the Cleveland Browns, New York Jets and Jacksonville Jaguars will all play games in London.
