Catterall Could Jeopardize Haney’s Ryan Garcia Payday

Catterall Could Jeopardize Haney’s Ryan Garcia Payday

Jack Catterall says he accepted a fight with Devin “Deebo” Haney and has “heard nothing since.” If Bill Haney is reconsidering the matchup, the hesitation makes sense. Catterall brings considerable risk without anything close to the money Devin can make in a rematch with Ryan Garcia.

Stylistically, the WBA regular welterweight champion presents a tricky test for Haney. Catterall shares some qualities with Shakur Stevenson, using quick movement, strong defensive skills, a southpaw stance and slick distance control. He is also physically strong and comfortable turning fights into tactical affairs.

That could take away one of Devin’s useful tactics.

Haney repeatedly clinched Brian Norman Jr. to shut down his offense during their bout. Catterall isn’t a fighter who can necessarily be controlled that way. He uses plenty of holding himself and has the strength to handle Devin in those physical exchanges.

The larger concern is what a loss would do to Haney’s future. A lucrative Garcia rematch would likely remain marketable if Catterall pulled off the upset, but Haney’s bargaining power could take an immediate hit. Losing his WBO belt before facing Garcia could weaken his leverage when the purse split is negotiated.

It could also delay the rematch.

If Catterall beats Haney, there would be considerable pressure on Devin to avenge the defeat rather than immediately move on to Garcia. Another training camp and dangerous fight would stand between Haney and the massive payday he wants, with a second loss to Catterall potentially doing serious damage to his career.

Amino Boxing believes Catterall has been smart to avoid getting dragged into Bill Haney’s social-media battles.

“Jack a smart dude. When you responding to Bill you already lost. Jack staying ahead of the bullshit. Not letting them control the narrative and destroy his reputation.”

Catterall did what he needed to do by publicly stating that he accepted the fight. “Accepted the fight and heard nothing since,” he said on X.

Now the decision rests with Team Haney. If they go elsewhere, the business logic isn’t difficult to understand. Catterall offers Devin considerable danger without providing the payday that makes taking the risk easier to justify.
