Carlisle release statement as FA demand answers over sick Robbie Savage abuse from fans which ‘crossed line’

CARLISLE have released a club statement confirming that they have been contacted by the FA in relation to accusations of abuse aimed at Forest Green Rover boss Robbie Savage.

Savage, 51, called out abuse from Carlisle fans following the Cumbrian outfit’s 4-2 victory over his side in a National League clash on Saturday.

He said: “I’ll take the banter, when they’re singing songs about me, I’ve got no problem.

“But when it crosses the line, when it becomes nasty and some of the stuff said is wrong. What’s done about it?”

Now Carlisle have announced that they have been contacted ‘for their observations’ in relation to the incident at Brunton Park.

The club statement read: “Carlisle United confirms that we have been contacted by The Football Association (FA) for our observations following a report of an incident of abuse during Saturday’s fixture against Forest Green Rovers at Brunton Park.

“This relates to allegations of offensive, discriminatory chants and abuse aimed at Forest Green Rovers Manager Robbie Savage, during the game.

“The Club is reviewing the points raised. This includes providing the information requested, reviewing available video, audio and CCTV footage as part of our response to The FA.”

The Welsh coach, who turned out as a player for sides like Leicester City, Birmingham City and Derby County as a player, took over at Forest Green in July.

He has enjoyed a strong start to life at the Gloucestershire club, who currently sit fifth in the league after fifteen games played.

The loss to second-placed was just their second of the season, but Savage felt the celebrations boiled over into abuse.

The statement continued: “Carlisle United has clear expectations for supporter behaviour, and takes any incidents that do not meet our expectations very seriously.

“The Club promotes equality, diversity and inclusion and expects everyone attending Brunton Park to show respect for all participants, players, staff, officials, opponents and fellow fans.

“We understand games are passionate and emotive, but abusive or discriminatory language and chanting is totally unacceptable and will not be tolerated by the Club, as detailed in our Club Charter and policies.

“Any instances identified will be dealt with in accordance with our Sanctioning Policy.”

The no-nonsense stance from the club will likely be a welcome one for Savage, who has fumed about the lack of action taken in response to such incidents.

He even claimed after receiving the abuse that this was not the first incident of its kind that he has faced since moving into management with Macclesfield in 2024.

“I’ve taken photos with kids, I’m happy to engage with fans.

“But then I get hurled the most shocking abuse by people of all ages, probably people in high-powered jobs and they think it’s fine. It’s not.”

“It happened the other night at Worthing and it’s happened again today.
