Cardinals’ $9.4 million rookie needs to regain pre-injury form to justify Arizona’s draft bet

Cardinals’ .4 million rookie needs to regain pre-injury form to justify Arizona’s draft bet

The Arizona Cardinals are hoping for a breakout season after missing the NFL Playoffs for the past two years. However, it’s going to require major contributions from the defense—especially if Kyler Murray struggles to get the offense moving.

One of the key contributors expected to bolster the defense is rookie cornerback Will Johnson, considered a major steal in the second round of the NFL Draft. Johnson’s draft stock dropped due to lingering injuries he couldn’t fully shake during his time at Michigan.

“Michigan CB Will Johnson Jr. has a knee issue that has concerned some NFL teams and helps explain why he still has not been selected,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter posted.

Although his knee was flagged at the combine, the Cardinals couldn’t pass on the opportunity to grab a young, high-upside cornerback.

“The knee was flagged at combine testing, the results of which teams typically get in mid-to-late April. In the hours before Day 2, some teams considering Johnson still had questions. Arizona was fine with the issues, and as a result, Johnson had the team circled as a strong possibility entering the start of the second round,” Cardinals Wire’s Jess Root wrote.

Johnson has the potential to become a major asset for the Cardinals. The talent and upside are clear. However, as Bleacher Report’s Damian Parson notes, Johnson must return to his pre-injury form to truly make an impact.

“The 22-year-old is expected to be ready for training camp for the NFL teams during this off period. Once back in the lineup, he must display the complete coverage skill set that initially crowned him as a projected first-round pick,” Parson wrote.

Johnson hasn’t played a single snap in the NFL yet, but expectations are already high. The Cardinals appear fully committed to him—but in a league where one or two injuries can derail a career, Johnson’s ability to stay healthy for most of the season will be critical to his and the team’s success.
