Wayne Gretzky is considered the greatest hockey player of all time. He holds numerous records, some of which might not ever be reached. Thanks to Alexander Ovechkin, one record may finally be broken for the first time in three decades. 

As of April 1, 2025, Ovechkin has 890 goals. He needs four to tie and five to break Wayne Gretzky’s record of 894. Depending on how he plays, he could reach or even break the record on April 10 when the Washington Capitals face the Carolina Hurricanes

The 39-year-old Ovechkin has 37 goals in his 20th season and can reach 40 despite missing games with a broken left fibula.

The Capitals face a Metro Division rival in the Hurricanes, a team a few points away from them in the standings. The former holds an edge in the rivalry, winning over 100 games.
