After a disappointing 2022-23 season that saw the Capitals miss the playoffs for the first time in nearly a decade, expectations are cautiously optimistic heading into 2024. The team’s core, while aging, still includes superstar Alex Ovechkin, who is chasing the all-time goals record.

His journey took a rocky start last season, as he struggled with just eight goals in his first 43 games. However, he rebounded, and finished with 31 goals. The Capitals’ playoff berth was almost an afterthought until the very end of the regular season. A crucial 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers secured the eighth seed, albeit under chaotic circumstances.

Despite their playoff appearance, the Capitals showed vulnerabilities, posting the worst goal differential (-37) of any playoff team since 1991. Their first-round matchup against the New York Rangers highlighted these issues, resulting in a swift four-game sweep where they were outscored 15-7.

In response, management has been proactive in reshaping the roster. Departures of some players were balanced with strategic acquisitions, particularly bolstering the defensive unit. This revamped lineup aims not only to support Ovechkin’s pursuit of 894 career goals but also to transform the Capitals into a more competitive playoff contender.
