Capitals legend announces NHL retirement after 17 seasons

After a storied NHL career for two franchises, T.J. Oshie is retiring from the NHL after 17 seasons.

The talented forward appeared in 1,010 games, starting his career with the St. Louis Blues and finishing it with the Washington Capitals.

Oshie won the Stanley Cup with the Caps in 2018.

He finished his career with 302 goals and 393 assists for 695 points.

“After 17 unforgettable years in the NHL, I’ve decided to retire,” Oshie said in a statement. “I would like to thank the Washington Capitals and the St. Louis Blues for giving me the opportunity to play the game I love, all of my teammates who battled with me every night, my coaches who challenged me to be better every day, and the athletic trainers and equipment staff who got me ready to play. I also want to thank the fans  your energy and passion made every game memorable, and it was an honour to play in front of you.”

The only bummer in the final days of Oshie’s career is that he didn’t play at all in the 2024-25 season due to a back injury.

Before that, he was one of the NHL’s best for a long time.

The Blues picked him 24th overall in 2005 out of North Dakota.

He spent his first seven seasons with St. Louis before being traded to the nation’s capital.

Oshie was a shootout expert, finishing his career with 49 shootout goals.

He also represented the United States on a number of international stages.

Oshie couldn’t stick around for the end of Alex Ovechkin’s career, but he spent many good years with him.

Now, the 38-year old hangs up his skates for good.
