Alex Ovechkin broke a legendary goal scorer’s record on Friday night.
No, he only tied Wayne Gretzky for the most goals in NHL history.
But on the same goal that Ovechkin tied Gretzky, he broke the NHL record for game-winning goals as it held up as the difference maker in the Capitals’ victory.
Ovechkin notched his 136th game-winning goal, breaking a tie with Jaromir Jagr. Gordie Howe sits in third place on that list.
The Russian superstar fired in a pair of goals, numbers 893 and 894 of his career, to give the Capitals a 4-3 lead with 13:46 to play.
Ovechkin came close a couple times in the closing stages but couldn’t get the Gretzky breaker. Washington got an empty-netter late to win 5-3.

The game-winning goal stat is an especially cool one for Ovechkin, who even now has a flare for the dramatic.
The Capitals didn’t just need his goals Friday night to chase the record. They needed them to win the game, and he delivered.
