IBF super middleweight champion William Scull revealed today that he’s been approached by Canelo Alvarez’s team for an undisputed championship fight at 168 in May in Las Vegas.
If the fight against the Cuban Scull (23-0, 9 KOs) gets made, WBA, WBC, and WBO 168-lb champion Canelo (62-2-2, 39 KOs) would have the opportunity to become a two-time undisputed champ.
Canelo Calling
This probably won’t make Terence Crawford happy because he hoped to move up to 168 to challenge Canelo for his unified titles. However, that doesn’t look like it will happen for Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs), and he’ll need to make other plans, such as fighting at 154 or retiring. Oh well, we don’t always get what we want.
It doesn’t look good for Crawford with his dreams of fighting Canelo, but he probably won’t give him sitting and hoping for that match to happen.
If he’d just stayed busy fighting often, he wouldn’t need to push so hard for a golden parachute fight against Canelo. He’d make plenty of money from his other fights. If Crawford moved up to 175, he could take on David Benavidez and try to put himself in position to get a big payday fighting undisputed light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev. Crawford reportedly spars with light heavyweights all the time.
Scull, 32, recently captured the vacant IBF title with a questionable 12-round unanimous decision victory over Vladimir Shishkin on October 19th at the Stadthalle, Falkensee, Germany. The scores were 116-113, 116-112 and 115-113. Many boxing fans felt that Shishkin had done enough to deserve the victory.
Scull’s Big Break
“William Scull confirms for the program Cubanos Punos that there is a rapprochement between his team and the #Canelo Team for a possible unifying confrontation next May in Las Vegas. Scull adds that this January 10, there will be an official meeting between both teams to finally agree on everything. Furthermore, the IBF Super Middleweight World Champion clarifies that Berlanga did exist as a possibility, as did Christian Mbilli, who was ruled out for monetary reasons,” said Carlos Linares on X.
