Canelo Exposes Crawford’s “Manufactured” Record: No Elite Fighters in 41-0 Run Before Netflix Fight

Canelo Alvarez cooked Terence Crawford over his resume today, exposing him as having no elite-level fighters on his artificially manufactured 41-0 record ahead of their fight on Netflix on September 13th.

Canelo Questions Crawford’s Resume

Alvarez (63-2-2, 39 KOs) spoke some real truths, putting a spotlight on the career of Crawford by pointing out that he’s never fought one elite-level fighter in his 17 years in the pro game. In an attempt to validate himself, Crawford mentioned that he’d fought Viktor Postol in 2016, which elicited a laugh from the Mexican superstar.

Alvarez Dismisses Postol, Burns

Canelo said Postol was NOT an elite fighter, and revealed that he’d been beaten up in his gym by a 40-year-old fighter. He didn’t say who that was, but it didn’t matter. Few fans would say that Postol was ever elite. Crawford then mentioned that he had beaten Ricky Burns, whom he claimed was elite. Canelo didn’t go for that, saying he wasn’t elite either.

Indeed, Burns was coming off a controversial draw against Ray Beltran when he fought Crawford in 2014, and had looked horrible getting hurt in his fight against Jose Gonzalez in 2013. Burns was clearly on the decline when he defended his WBO lightweight title against him.

What Turki Alalshikh should have done is insist that Crawford beat one or two elite-level fighters so that he could share the ring with King Canelo at 168. Having Crawford go through this little 3-fighter gauntlet would have been ideal:

  1. David Benavidez
  2. David Morrell
  3. Diego Pacheco

Alvarez: No Elite Foes

Canelo Alvarez: “If you look at his career, mention one elite fighter,” said Alvarez to Ring Magazine YouTube channel, talking about the barren resume of Terence Crawford, which is filled with lesser fighters.

Terence Crawford: “So, [Viktor] Postol wasn’t elite?”

Canelo: “Who?”

Crawford: “Viktor Postol.”

Canelo: “Who is that guy?”

Crawford: “Oh, so he wasn’t commercialized, he wasn’t. Ricky Burns wasn’t elite?”

Canelo: “40 A 40-year-old champion at that moment beat Viktor Postol in my gym. I saw.”

Crawford: “So, Ricky Burns wasn’t elite?

Canelo: “Ricky Burns wasn’t elite.”

Crawford: “It’s cool. I’m going to fight another elite fighter in September.”

Canelo: “There’s champion fighters and elite fighters. There’s a difference.”

Crawford: “I’m going to fight an elite fighter in September.”

Canelo: “Okay, we’re going to find out. You’re a good fighter. You’re uncle, Turki Alalshikh, paid you enough money because it’s going to be the last, that’s for sure.”

Crawford: “It may be.”

Canelo: “I hope they pay you enough.”

Crawford: “Sometimes when fighters fight, they’re never the same. I hope your career continued after.”

Canelo: “If you look at my career, they’re never the same after me.”

Crawford: “Canelo has a great resume, fought a lot of great champions, but at the age he fought them in, nah. They were already in decline, some of them, and when he didn’t, you saw what happened. He fought [Erislandy] Lara, and I thought Lara beat him. He fought Mayweather, and you saw what happened. He fought Bivol, and he came up short.”
