Canelo Alvarez: Terence Crawford “A Little Better” Than Floyd Mayweather Jr. & Fight is “Best in Boxing History”

Canelo Alvarez says Terence Crawford is “a little better” than Floyd Mayweather Jr. was, and he sees his fight against him as one of the “best fights in boxing history.”

That’s a bit of a stretch on both of those comments by Canelo (63-2-2, 39 KOs). This is not the fight that fans wanted. It’s one that Turki Alalshikh was eager to make, as he likes Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs).

Crawford: Better Than Mayweather?

“I put that fight in another place right now. I think Crawford is a little better than Mayweather, but Canelo has more experience now,” said Canelo Alvarez to Fighthype when asked how Terence Crawford compares to his fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2013.

Canelo, 34, is trying to build Crawford up by praising him so that more fans will subscribe to Netflix to watch it. He obviously isn’t better than Mayweather was. If he were, he wouldn’t have struggled against Israil Madrimov and would have been a PPV attraction. Crawford’s fighting style isn’t to everyone’s taste, as many fans prefer to see action rather than fighters who hit, move, and hold all night.

“I think it’s a totally different fight. I don’t want to compare this fight with other fights,” said Alvarez about his defense against Crawford on September 13th. “I think this fight is one of the best fights in boxing history, and that’s it.”

Canelo is going overboard a little bit, calling his fight with Crawford as one of the “best fights in boxing history.” It’s not. His first two fights against Gennadiy Golovkin were far better, and his match against Mayweather was more interesting.

Crawford isn’t as popular with the mainstream public as GGG or Mayweather were when Alvarez fought them. Terence’s popularity is limited to hardcore boxing fans who enjoy watching boxers. Canelo-Crawford may be seen by more fans due to Turki Alalshikn negotiating to have it shown on Netflix, but it’s not one of the “best fights” in the sport.

If Canelo’s other important fights against GGG, Floyd, and Miguel Cotto were shown on Netflix, they’d do better numbers than his clash against Crawford.
