Canelo Alvarez Explains His Inability to Find a Solution for Terence Crawford

Canelo Alvarez says his body wasn’t working for him to allow him to figure out Terence Crawford in his 12-round unanimous decision defeat on Saturday night at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Canelo (63-3-2, 39 KOs) states that he “couldn’t figure out the style” that Crawford (42-0, 31 KOs) was using.

Crawford’s Elusive Style

It was pretty basic what Crawford, 37, was doing. He was running for extended periods of each round. That made it impossible for Canelo to land because he was never a stationary target for any length of time.

The only times in the fight Crawford stood and traded with Canelo were in the 11th and 12th, when he opened up with a mini flurry of weak pitty pat punches. They were shoeshine-type shots, with many missing or being picked off by Canelo’s gloves.

Punch Stats

  • Terence Crawford: 165 landed of 558 thrown for 33.1%
  • Canelo Alvarez: 132 of 465 for 36.1%

The scores were 116-112, 115-113, and 115-113 for Crawford. I had Canelo 118-110. He was the aggressor pushing the fight, landing the harder shots, and deserved the victory.

There was a lot of running from Crawford, which made it hard to see him winning more than a handful of rounds. The judges didn’t give Canelo credit for being the one initiating most of the action in the fight. They should have been when a fighter is just moving to eat up the clock in rounds, the judges need to note that and score the rounds for the guy who is actually fighting. In this case, Canelo.

Canelo’s Body Fails Him

“I tried my best, but I couldn’t figure out the style. Everything. He has everything,” said Canelo Alvarez at the post-fight press conference when asked why he couldn’t adapt to defeat Terence Crawford on Saturday night.

“Sometimes you try, and your body can’t go. That’s my frustration. Maybe I could have figured out Crawford, but my body didn’t let me go. I hit Crawford, but not with my clean shots with all my power.

“He’s a great fighter. He knows how to move and everything,” said Canelo.
