Canelo Alvarez 167.5 vs. Terence Crawford 167.5 – Official Weigh-in results for Saturday

Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford weighed in at 167.5 pounds apiece today in their weigh-in for what Turki Alalshikh calls “Fight of the Century”, this Saturday night at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. They both looked slim, but Crawford looked the thinner of the two, almost like his days as a welterweight.

Doubts Rise for Crawford

Beyond the diehard Crawford fans, the consensus among fans with no dog in this hunt is that the mix of Bud’s advanced age [38 on September 28], jumping up three weight classes, and a long one-plus-year layoff, will take a toll on him, preventing him from overcoming Canelo’s size and power advantages.

Canelo would face the same disadvantages that Crawford had if he were motivated enough to move up two to three weight classes to challenge for a world title at cruiserweight against apex fighters Jai Opetaia or at heavyweight against Oleksandr Usyk.

The division jump would be too much for Canelo. If the fans are right, Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) is going to get dealt with by Canelo, and it might not be pretty to watch for Terence’s loyal following.

The Challenger’s Loyal Friend

“I think that style is a bad one for him. He needs a standstill target for him to land the big shots that he wants to land. If you’re standing still, he’ll land, but if you move a little bit, he don’t llike it,” said Crawford’s close friend, Shakur Stevenson to the Daily Mail Boxing, talking about how Canelo Alvarez struggles against movers.

As you can tell, Shakur is loyal to Crawford, believing he’ll come through this fight against Canelo, just like he did at 147, against well-worn fighters, Errol Spence, David Avanesyan, and Shawn Porter. It would be interesting to see if Shakur believed that Crawford could move to 175 and beat David Benaviez after this. That would be fun to hear how Shakur would predict a similar “easy” win for Crawford.

“Yes, that’s why I say I wouldn’t be surprised if he wobbles and hurts him,” said Shakur when asked if Crawford will be able to stand still and fight Canelo at some points in the fight. “But Canelo better to go in there with respect because I’m hearing he don’t think Bud can hurt him. I don’t believe that.”
