Cameron Norrie responds after John McEnroe called out ‘weird’ behaviour live on BBC at Wimbledon

CAMERON NORRIE has respond to John McEnroe slamming his “weird” on court antics.

The British star lost in the Wimbledon quarter-final to reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz yesterday.

Norrie slipped to a 6-2 6-3 6-3 defeat but had good moments in the match, which he celebrated with a fist pump and a roar of “vamos”.

The Spanish word translates to “let’s go” or “come on”.

BBC commentator and tennis icon McEnroe was left baffled by Norrie’s attempts to fire himself up.

He said: “Was that Norrie saying ‘vamos’?

“It’s weird for a guy that was born in South Africa, grew up in New Zealand and is a Brit, that he’s saying ‘vamos’.”

Norrie was quizzed in his post-match press conference about the use of “vamos” and denied it was to wind-up Spaniard Alcaraz.

He explained: “No, my coach [Facundo Lugones] is Argentinian. I was saying kind of ‘vamos’ the whole tournament.

“Just trying to bring myself energy. I had to hold out a lot of tough serves, that’s why I was doing that.”

Norrie’s runs to the quarter-final comes after British No.1 Jack Draper fell in the second round to Marin Cilic.

Asked if he was overlooked and underestimated in the build-up to Wimbledon, Norrie replied: “Honestly, I don’t care about that.

“It would have been nice to see Jack go deeper. I think he would have liked that too. He’s one of the best players in the world at the moment.

“For me, no, I was just concentrated on myself. I had a really tough draw.

“I was playing Roberto Bautista Agut. He made a good run in Queen’s. I was trying to take it a match at a time.

“I’m just happy to be enjoying my tennis more than anything.

“I’m not caring about who else is doing well.

“It would be nice to see that. But no, I was happy with the way I was enjoying my tennis.”
