With the Pittsburgh Steelers still waiting on a decision from Aaron Rodgers, who appears to be contemplating retirement, the team had a golden opportunity to add Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders with the No. 21 overall pick on Thursday.
However, the team did not take Sanders and instead opted to draft Oregon defensive lineman Derrick Harmon, who definitely fills a major need for Pittsburgh.
While that’s all well and good, the Steelers don’t have another draft pick until the third round, barring a massive trade up. And, the longer they wait to take a quarterback, the less likely that signal-caller will be ready to contribute in Year 1, which only leaves them more dependent on Rodgers.
Before the Steelers were on the clock on Thursday night, Heyward addressed the Rodgers situation and preached patience as the waiting game continues.
“No, nothing has happened,” Heyward said on his podcast. “I think we’ve talked about it a little bit. I don’t think we give enough patience to people. I think in this day and age with social media and everything, we kind of just expect an answer right there, right now.
“And I don’t know where this is gonna end. I don’t know if he’s ever gonna be a Steeler. I don’t know if he’s already a Steelers, but I think, let’s just show some patience,” Heyward concluded.
At this point, the Steelers really have no choice but to wait. Rodgers is the best option out there for the Steelers in 2025 and if he doesn’t sign, Pittsburgh will be left with a nightmare scenario, as neither Mason Rudolph nor Skylar Thompson are starting-caliber quarterbacks.
The Steelers have been linked to a possible trade for Atlanta Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins if they don’t sign Rodgers, but anyone who thinks he’s a better option than the future Hall of Famer is sorely mistaken.
