Callum Simpson Gets Revenge, Beats Troy Williamson

Callum Simpson regained the British and Commonwealth super-middleweight titles Saturday night, earning a unanimous decision over Troy Williamson at the First Direct Bank Arena in Leeds.

Judges scored it 116-112, 117-112 and 115-113 for Simpson, who avenged the only loss of his professional career.

Williamson stopped Simpson in the 10th round of their December fight after dropping him four times. Instead of chasing an early knockout to erase that defeat, Simpson fought with greater discipline and maintained a steady work rate throughout the rematch.

Simpson had his best attack in the third, hurting Williamson with heavy combinations at short range and forcing him to hold until the bell.

Williamson recovered and gradually turned the fight into a grueling physical battle. He found success during the middle and later rounds whenever he backed Simpson up and landed clean power shots.

Simpson refused to let the fight descend into the chaos of their first meeting. He kept throwing, used his size during the clinches and avoided giving Williamson the same clean opportunities that had produced four knockdowns eight months earlier.

During the late rounds, Simpson did a better job controlling the distance and limiting Williamson’s opportunities. Williamson continued pressing for the stoppage he needed, but Simpson made it through the final six minutes and secured the decision.

A third fight would be easy to sell. Williamson owns the four-knockdown stoppage from their first meeting, while Simpson has answered with a clear points victory and regained the British and Commonwealth titles.

The rivalry is 1-1, and a third fight would settle it.
