Buccaneers get first look at slimmed-down Desmond Watson after 464-pound Florida career

Don’t get it twisted: Desmond Watson is still a large man.

But the Buccaneers’ gargantuan rookie has slimmed down considerably since his time at Florida. He rocked a No. 56 Tampa Bay jersey for the first time on Friday at rookie minicamp.

Watson said recently that after reaching 464 pounds at Florida, he’s now down to 437.

At 6-foot-6, 437, he’s still hard to miss.

Watson was called “The Tush Push Terminator” in the lead-up to the draft, and he embraced the nickname. He wasn’t taken in the seven rounds but was signed as an undrafted free agent almost immediately after the draft’s conclusion.

Now, it’s up to him to see if he can crack the roster.

There’s no one like Watson in the NFL. Even in a league of large men, he’d be by far the heaviest to ever get a regular season snap (the record is currently 380).

Watson is athletic for his size, and he’s got a great mentor on the interior of the defensive line in 350-pound star Vita Vea.

A famous phrase in basketball is, “You can’t teach height.”

Well here, it’s more like, “You can’t teach size.”

Watson’s got the size, and some unexpected athleticism, and the Buccaneers may just find a way to make that all work for them.
