Broncos urged to focus on one position in first round of draft

Broncos urged to focus on one position in first round of draft

The Denver Broncos are just a little over one week away from going on the clock with the No. 20 overall pick in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. The team has a list of likely players they could have to choose from with that pick, but there may be one position that the team has to make sure it gets.

Josh Edwards of CBS Sports talked about seven teams that have a major weakness at one position and the Broncos make the list, having what he feels is the weakest running back room in the league.

“Without cheating, name one running back on Denver’s roster right now.

Former top draft pick JaVonte Williams was signed away by the Cowboys in free agency. The franchise is left with Jaleel McLaughlin, Audric Estime, Tyler Badie and Blake Watson. They were active in free agency addressing other needs. One may even come to the conclusion that it was all done to set up the selection of a running back in the first round. North Carolina’s Omarion Hampton is a prospect who has commonly been mentioned in association with the Broncos in Round 1″, wrote Edwards.

Edwards brings up Omarion Hampton, a player you will see going to the Broncos in about 90 percent of the mocks that have been produced recently. Many analysts around the league seem to think the Broncos will take Hampton, but is that the kind of move Sean Payton wants to make?

It’s a deep running back class and the Broncos can find a starting running back in the second or third round. Ashton Jeanty almost certainly will be off the board before pick No. 20. What if another team, like the Dallas Cowboys, jumps on Hampton in the first?

That would force the Broncos to take another road, if that is indeed the road they plan to take in the first round. But that is debatable, as Payton may want to add an impact player to the defensive line, such as Kenneth Grant of Michigan or Walter Nolen out of Ole Miss.

The Broncos need to draft a running back in this draft, and the team has basically confirmed that it will, but it’s not imperative that the team take one in the first round. This class is rich with talent at the position.
