The Denver Broncos went into the offseason needing to provide Bo Nix and the offense with as many playmakers as possible. The team feels that it has done that with the free-agent addition of Evan Engram and the draft picks of RJ Harvey and Pat Bryant.
But is that enough?
Looking specifically at the wide receiver position, the only additions the team made this offseason were Bryant and Trent Sherfield, a player known mostly for his special teams abilities. The wide receiver group is young and inexperienced beyond Courtland Sutton and that has led some to believe the Broncos need to keep their ears open for a potential deal.
Brandon Austin of PFSN recently suggested one player each team should try and trade for before the season kicks off, and he has the Broncos connected to Green Bay Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs.
“With rookie quarterback Bo Nix under center, the Denver Broncos’ offense surprised many people in 2024. They weren’t a top offense by any means, but the unit averaged 22.7 points per game during the regular season (11th in the NFL) and excelled in the red zone with a 62.5% conversion rate (7th). With that being said, Denver entered the offseason with a need for more playmakers on that side of the ball.
The Broncos bolstered the tight end position by adding Evan Engram in free agency. The wide receiver room currently features Courtland Sutton, Marvin Mims Jr., Devaughn Vele, Troy Franklin, and rookie Pat Bryant. Mims has emerged as a big-play threat, and Sutton had a productive season with 1,000-plus yards and eight scores. Still, he’s not a definitive No. 1 receiver, and Denver could benefit from adding more talent to the room.
The Packers had one of the most crowded WR rooms in the NFL last season, with four players logging at least 500 snaps, more than any other team. Christian Watson’s torn ACL in January slightly clarifies the situation, but Green Bay continued to add talent to the position through the draft — selecting Matthew Golden in the first round and Savion Williams in Round 3.
That put Romeo Doubs’ future in question entering the final year of his rookie contract. While he posted career bests in yards per game (46.2), yards per catch (13.1), and catch rate (63.9%), Doubs’ season was marred by multiple concussions and a one-game suspension tied to frustrations about his role. At 25, he seemingly has untapped potential”, wrote Austin.
Doubs is a talented wide receiver who still has several years of potential left in his prime. He has 147 catches for 1,700 yards and 15 touchdowns in his first three seasons. Entering the final year of his deal, and having to fight for snaps in Green Bay, he could definitely be a trade target.
Doubs would add a bit more experience to the Denver wide receiver group but with him being in the last year of his deal, the Broncos shouldn’t offer anything more than a day three draft pick unless they can negotiate an extension first, and that may not be the best idea until they see what he can do in Denver first.
It’s a decent idea and it falls in line with the many trade predictions this offseason that have had the Broncos looking to upgrade the wide receiver position. But Sean Payton and his staff like players like Vele and Bryant much more than most people realize, and will likely be just fine going into the season with those players in position to be big contributors.
