Losing brings about changes, and the Bruins have done far too much losing this season for everything to remain unchanged. Months after firing coach Jim Montgomery, Boston made another franchise-altering move on Friday.
The Bruins traded longtime star Brad Marchand to the Panthers, ending his 16-year tenure in Boston and giving the 36-year-old a fresh start on a contender.
While not out of playoff contention by any means in a crowded Eastern Conference wild-card race, the Bruins just have not been able to find a rhythm and surge up the standings this season. Boston entered Thursday having lost seven of its past eight games, pushing the franchise toward selling at the trade deadline.
Here are the full details of the trade that sent Marchand to Florida.

Brad Marchand 2024-25 stats
Games | Goals | Assists | Points | +/- |
61 | 21 | 26 | 47 | -8 |
Marchand has 47 points on 21 goals, and 26 assists across 61 games this season, after posting 67 points in each of the last two seasons.
A 100-point player at his peak in 2018-19, Marchand has five seasons of at least 80 points to his name and is closing in on 1,000 career points.
Marchand helped the Bruins win the Stanley Cup during his rookie season in 2011 and led Boston back to the Stanley Cup Final in 2019, but with the franchise heading in the wrong direction, the Bruins decided now was the time for all parties to start fresh.
Brad Marchand contract
Marchand is in the final season of an eight-year, $49 million contract. He’s set to be an unrestricted free agent in the summer, so the Bruins were incentivized to get something in return for him now with their season teetering.
Marchand’s cap hit is $6.125 this season, and he will look to cash in one more time this offseason if he doesn’t sign an extension with his new team.
