Boxing Results: Diego Pacheco Dominates Trevor McCumby in Safety-First Performance, Fans Boo Defensive Style

Super middleweight contender Diego Pacheco (24-0, 18 KOs) won a dull safety-first 12-round unanimous decision over Trevor McCumby (28-2, 21 KOs) in the co-feature bout on Saturday night at The Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas.

The scores were 120-108, 119-109, and 119-109.

#1 WBO ranked Pacheco mostly jabbed all night, choosing to stay on the outside out of harm’s way, avoiding the powerful shots that McCumby was attempting to hit him with.

McCumby suffered a cut on his forehead from a clash of heads in round two. The cut blood through the remainder of the fight. With 21 seconds to go in the 12th, referee Lawrence Cole called a timeout to have McCumby’s cut examined by the ringside doctor. He allowed the fight to continue. It was a weird time to have the cut examined.

Pacheco’s Safety-First Strategy

The crowd disliked Pacheco’s hit-and-not-get-hit Jerry-esque fighting style, and they let him know about it by booing off and on from the fourth round through the twelfth.

It was Pacheco who was unwilling to make a fight of it, as McCumby was trying to get to him, but he kept stepping back three to six feet when attacked. It bore a striking resemblance to the fighting style favored by Shakur Stevenson, and it was as boring as it gets.

This was NOT the performance that the Matchroom-promoted Pacheco needed to make a case for him to get a title shot against undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez. This was like a William Scull-type fight for Diego.

Diego’s Jab-Heavy Style

“I was trying to find my distance to control the fight. All I was worried about was getting the W and preparing for the next one,” said Pacheco after the fight. “Definitely, he’s a strong fighter. He had great punches. I saw him trying to bait me in.

“I stayed behind my jab all day. Trevor is a great fighter. That’s why I picked him to test me. We clashed heads a few times. I felt I wasn’t in danger on the outside. That’s why I kept it there. I wanted to get Trevor on my resume.

“I know there are big fights ahead for me. I want anyone in the top 10. The fans in LA deserve a fight between me and someone from the top 10
