Boxing Results: Deonte Brown Outworks Aggressive Grimardi Machuca in Tactical Ten-Round War to Win Vacant WBC Continental Americas Super Featherweight Championship

Deonte Brown (17-0 (11) defeated Grimardi Machuca (17-3 (14) by a 10-round unanimous decision to capture the vacant Continental Americas Super Featherweight title on Friday night at the Commerce Casino, Commerce, California.

In the first three rounds, previously unbeaten Machuca is coming off a pair of losses, looking to rebound in a close fight. In the fourth and fifth rounds, Brown outworked Machuca.

In the sixth and seventh rounds, Machuca continues coming forward while southpaw Brown counters with his left. In the eighth round’s final minute, there was a clash of heads as referee Thomas Taylor checked both.

In the ninth round, Brown, with his hands to his side, counters Machua. In the tenth and final round, Brown seemed to be ahead while Machuca had problems landing.

The scores were 96-94, 96-94, and 97-93.

In the co-feature, bantamweight Saul Sanchez (21-4-1 (12) ended in a majority eight-round draw with Edwin Rodriguez (12-9-3 (5).

In the first three rounds, the aggressive Sanchez had an edge to avenge a loss to Rodriguez six years ago. In the fourth through the sixth rounds, Rodriguez countered well, taking the round.

In the fifth and sixth rounds, Rodriguez was more aggressive at the start before moving backwards to counter. In the seventh round, Rodriguez had much swelling under his right eye and was checked by the ring physician between rounds. In the eighth and final round, Rodriguez had an edge in a close round.

The Scores were 78-74 Sanchez, 76-76, and 76-76. Gerard White was the referee.

Light welterweight Angel ‘Sharpie’ Perez (10-0-1 (8) knocked out Sachin Rohila (8-4 (2) at 2:04 of the first round of a scheduled four-round bout.

In the first round, Perez landed a left hook to the body, and down went Rohila for the count from referee David Solivan.

Super bantamweight Cornellio Phipps (6-0 (2) defeated Jesse ‘Super’ Mandapat (9-3-1 (5) by a six-round split decision.

In the second round, Phipps hurt Mandapat with a left hook on the chin in the first minute, taking another round. In the third and fourth rounds, Mandapat came back well, winning both close rounds. In the sixth and final round, both had their moments. In a close fight, Phipps may have won.

The scores are 59-55 Phipps, 58-56 Mandapat, and 58-56 Phipps. Gerard White was the referee.

Light welterweight Criztec Bazaldua (6-2 (1) lost a close six-round unanimous decision to Darian Castro (4-0 (1).  Bazaldua scored the lone knockdown.

In the second round, a counter straight left from Bazaldua on the chin of Castro dropped him for an 8-count from referee David Solivan. Castro got up immediately and fought back well. In the third round’s midway point, Castro hurt Bazaldua with a combination, taking the round.

In the fourth round’s final minute, Castro drew blood from the mouth of Bazaldua with an overhand left. In the fifth round, Bazaldua came back in a close round. In the sixth and final round, hands to his side, Castro went to the body well of Bazaldua in a close fight at the end.

The scores were 57-56, 57-56, and 58-55.

Super featherweight Jorge Unyce Ruiz (2-0 (2) stopped Prince Martin (1-3-1 (1) at 1:46 of the second round of a scheduled four rounds.

In the second round, referee Thomas Taylor called a halt to the contest.

Super featherweight Narek Hovhannisyan (2-0 (1) knocked out Eric Howard (7-4 (2) at 0:42 of the fourth and final round.

In the fourth round, referee David Solivan called a halt.

Welterweight Kamari Burnside (2-0) defeated Obed Sepulveda (1-9, 1 KO) by a four-round unanimous decision.

The scores were 39-37, 39-37, and 40-36. Gerald White was the referee.

Light welterweight Isaiah Garcia (1-0) defeated Clayton Hibbert, 2-10 (2) by a four-round disqualification. In the fourth round, referee Gerald White DQ’d Hibbert.

2020 Olympian Shakilya Ellis (1-0) defeated Maria ‘Polvoarita’ Salinas (27-13-6 (16) by a six-round unanimous decision.

In the first three rounds, Ellis had the edge over the aggressive Salinas. In the fourth and fifth rounds the former Olympian Ellis countered the four-time world title challenger Salinas.

In the sixth and final round, Ellis became the aggressor and dominated the game against Salinas.

The scores were 60-54, 58-56, and 59-55. Thomas Taylor was the referee.
