Lightweight Deonte ‘Lay Em Down’ Brown easily defeated Dennis ‘Martillo’ Contreras by an eight-round unanimous decision on Friday night at the Red Owl Boxing Arena in Houston, Texas.
Coming back after almost three years, southpaw Brown, 16-0 (11) beat Contreras, 24-18-1 (22) by an eight-round decision.
In the first two rounds, Brown used a good jab as Contreras, with hands held high, did little in return. In the third round, Contreras keeps coming forward, walking into the punches from the much quicker of hands Brown. In the fourth round, a right hook from Brown knocked Contreras to the canvas in the final seconds, but referee Joe Rodriguez called it a slip.
In the seventh round, Contreras, in a corner, waves Brown in, and when he comes in, lands a combination to the chin of Contreras, who cannot handle the speed of the hand of Brown. In the final seconds, Contreras finally lands a pair of rights.
In the eighth and final round, it was all Brown until the last half minute when Contreras landed a left hook, knocking out the mouthpiece of Brown.
Scores were 80-72, 80-72, and 80-72.
In the co-main event, lightweight Javier Martinez, Jr. 7-2 (4) lost a disputed six-round split decision to Wayne ‘Pretty Boy Bam Bam’ Lawrence, 8-1 (4).
In the first round, Martinez, returning after almost three years, was in a close round with Lawrence. Both with identical records came to fight. In the second round, it was all Martinez, though referee James Green warned them twice to keep them up.
In the third round, Martinez never stopped throwing punches, mostly overhand rights, as Lawrence tied him up throughout the round.
In the fourth round, Martinez was warned for hitting behind the head twice while in a clinch. Another round for Martinez. Lawrence had little more than a jab. In the fifth round, Lawrence continued jabbing and grabbing Martinez without a warning, but Martinez out-worked him. In the sixth and final round, referee Green finally warns Lawrence for continuous holding. Martinez won another round with non-stop punching.
The scores were 59-55 for Lawrence, 58-56 for Martinez, and 58-56 for Lawrence. 60-54 KH for Martinez.
Lightweight Gabriela ‘Sosa’ Tellez, 4-0 (1), stopped Lindsey ‘Hands of Steel’ Ellis, 2-2 (2), at 0:31 of the second round of a 4×2 rounds.
Tellez was all over Ellis in the first round, driving her around the ring. In the final minute, a right drew blood from Ellis’s nose. Tellez had Ellis defenseless against the ropes in the second round when Referee James Green wisely called a halt.
Welterweight southpaw Alex Donis (1-0) came off the canvas to defeat Andrew ‘Durango Kid’ Flamm (1-1) by a four-round unanimous decision.
In the first round, a clash of heads caused a cut on Flamm’s left eyebrow. In the second round, a lead right from Flamm on the chin dropped Donis for an 8-count from Referee Joseph Rodriguez. Donis had a bloody nose.
In the third round, Donis came back well enough to take the round. In the fourth and final round, Flamm was cut on the right eyebrow from a right from Donis, who outworked Flamm.
