Boxing Results: Dave Allen Delivers Stoppage Win Over Johnny Fisher in Thrilling Rematch at Copper Box Arena

Veteran Dave Allen (24-7-2, 19 KOs) handed previously unbeaten domestic-level British heavyweight Johnny Fisher (13-1, 11 KOs) his first career defeat in their rematch, knocking him out in the fifth round on Saturday night at the Copper Box Arena in London, England.

Calculated Calm, Then Chaos

Allen,33, played it cool for the first four rounds, throwing few punches and not sitting down on his shots against Fisher. In the fifth, Allen exploded, hurting Fisher with a left to the body followed by a right to the head that put him on the run.

Moments later, Allen connected on a left and right hook that put Fisher down. The right appeared to cuff Fisher on the back of the head, but it still looked clean. When Fisher, 26, got back to his feet, you could see that his legs were gone. He looked hurt as he shuffled around the ring, trying to escape, but it was no use.

Allen closed the distance and landed a left and right to the body, causing Fisher to drop his guard. Allen then tagged Fisher with a perfectly placed left hook to the jaw that whiplashed his head. As Fisher fell, Allen nailed him with a glancing right hand to the head. He was so out of it that he likely never felt the punch.

The referee, Marcus McDonnell, waived it off at the exact same time that Fisher’s corner threw in the towel. The time of the stoppage was at 3:00 of round five.

In rounds 1 through 4, Fisher was in control of the action, jabbing, using his trademark illegal stiff arm, and clinching whenever Allen got in position to land anything. It was ugly to watch. There were a lot of low blows from Fisher. In the third, he was warned for hitting on the break. He pretty much threw the rulebook out the window, trying anything to get the win. However, you could tell even then that he was heading toward trouble because he using a lot of energy, and looked scared whenever Allen would throw.

Lessons from Last December

There were a couple of big right hands that Allen landed in the first four rounds that let you know that he was going to catch Fisher with something big to either knock him out or drop him. In their previous fight last December, Allen had dropped Fisher in the fifth, but couldn’t finish him. Fisher then labored the rest of the way, taking huge punishment to win a very controversial 10-round split decision. Tonight, Allen wasn’t going to let the judges rob him again.
