BoMac Says Canelo Will Avoid a Crawford Rematch Due to a “One-Sided” Fight

BoMac Says Canelo Will Avoid a Crawford Rematch Due to a “One-Sided” Fight

Terence Crawford’s trainer, Brian ‘BoMac’ McIntyre, predictably gloated about his fighter’s victory over Canelo Alvarez from last Saturday, calling it a “one-sided” fight, despite two of the scores being 115-113.

BoMac’s “One-Sided” Victory Claim

After the fight, ‘BoMac’ was asked if he was interested in a rematch, and he said Canelo (63-3-2, 39 KOs) won’t want to fight Crawford (42-0, 31 KOs) again because he asserted it was a “one-sided” contest.

The fight did not appear to be a dominating one for Crawford, as his offense was inconsistent throughout the fight. Canelo was the one in control in most of the rounds, hunting the constantly moving Crawford like a predator, chasing prey into the brush.

There was nothing “one-sided” about that fight. The rounds that Crawford won were primarily ones in which he would land a few shots and take off running to prevent Alvarez from returning fire.

Terence would eat up the clock using this method of landing a few punches and then running until the rounds ended. The strategy is similar to how amateur wrestlers sit on a small points lead by backing away, circling, and avoiding to stay out of reach of their opponent.

Crawford used that strategy against Canelo, and it worked, but wasn’t “one-sided” as ‘BoMac’ claims. It was stalling to eat up a clock after a few landed shots.

An Unwanted Rematch in the Aftermath

“Canelo don’t want no more of that s***. That was one-sided,” said trainer Brian ‘BoMac’ McIntyre to Fighthype when asked if he’s interested in a rematch for his fighter, Terence Crawford, against Canelo Alvarez.

“As soon as we got established, as soon as we got our rhythm. it was a wrap after that. At the top,” said BoMac.

Given that Turki Alalshikh didn’t mention wanting to do a Canelo-Crawford rematch after the fight, it suggests that he’s not interested. That would be understandable because it was a boring fight due to the evasive, round-stalling tactics, which led to Crawford’s victory.

Even if the judges had given Canelo the win, a rematch would still not make sense because it would likely be just as dull as their first fight with Crawford running around the ring all night..

A rematch would likely play out in the same way, with Crawford choosing to use his hit-and-run style to eat up the clock after a few connects. That’s a style that Crawford would use against any high-level fighter that Turki picked out for him to fight.

So, if he went ahead and chose David Benavidez as Crawford’s next opponent, the chances are high that it would involve Terence running for 12 rounds and the fans booing the lack of action. Like Canelo, Benavidez would do his part, hunting Crawford all night. But when you’ve got a reluctant mover, it’s not going to be entertaining to watch.
