Bills on track to break another team record

The Bills return from a well-deserved bye week on Sunday night for a marquee matchup against the San Francisco 49ers – or at least we hope.  

With Orchard Park already blanketed in snow, the forecast calls for more of the same through to kickoff. But with fans armed and ready to help out with shovels, the Bills should have a chance to inch closer to breaking another team record, one only a handful of Bills fans might be aware of. 

Since their inception in 1960, only four Bills teams have managed to score 30+ points in nine games during a single season (not including playoffs). Those include the famous O.J. Simpson team of 1975, the 1991 Bills team that made it to the Super Bowl, and more recently, the 2020 and 2021 versions of the Bills led by Josh Allen and Sean McDermott. 

If you’ve been keeping count at home, you’ll know this year’s Bills have scored 30 or more points eight times already this season, meaning they now have six games to break or, at the very least, tie a team record before the playoffs start. 

At 9-2, Buffalo has been an offensive powerhouse this season on the back of Allen’s hot arm in the pocket. It took until Week 8 for the MVP frontrunner to throw his first pick in Seattle, while not surprisingly, he ranks only second to MVP favorite Lamar Jackson in EPA per play. 

As a group, the Bills’ offense ranks second to the Ravens in the same statistical category and Top 5 overall in Rush EPA – a credit to running back James Cook, who’s on pace for another 1,000-yard season with a career-high 10 rushing touchdowns already to his name. 

To help jog your memory, the Bills and Niners haven’t squared off since the shortened 2020 season, a game Buffalo won 32-24 at Levi’s Stadium. 

After struggling to contain the run last week on the way to a 38-10 loss to the Packers, the Bills strike San Francisco at the right time in the hopes of tying the record this week in front of their home fans.
