Bill Haney wants Jaron “Boots” Ennis to handle the heavy lifting at junior middleweight before Devin Haney eventually moves up to face him.
The strategy relies on both fighters taking care of their respective weight classes first. Devin will pursue the top matchups at welterweight while Ennis targets the key names at 154, with Vergil Ortiz Jr. specifically mentioned as part of the work Boots needs to complete.
“Boots needs to do what he’s supposed to do. He was supposed to tighten up 47. So, we’re going to tighten up 47. He tighten up 54,” Bill told Champside.
“No. No. No. We took care of Brian Norman. He was breathing down his neck and all the [expletive], and we tightened up Brian Norman. Right now, we got the 47, right? He didn’t want to do that part, so we did his part. Now he has to go ahead and tighten up Vergil, right? Go ahead and do some heavy lifting at 54, and we meet, you know what I mean, for all three, inshallah.”
Bill views Ennis as a major future target for Devin, but his preferred route does not involve immediately following Boots to 154. He wants Ennis to establish himself in the division while Devin continues pursuing the leading fights at welterweight.
If Ennis gets through Ortiz and collects the major belts at 154, the eventual fight with Haney becomes much bigger than a simple move up in weight.
“I think it’s his biggest fight. You know what I’m saying? And when we get to him, hopefully that will be our biggest fight as well.”
