Berlanga & Sheeraz: Millionaires Before Belts

Tim Bradley doesn’t understand how Edgar Berlanga and Hamzah Sheeraz are already millionaires before they’ve even won a world title during their careers.

Early Riches Hinder Ambition

Sheeraz (21-0-1, 17 KOs) battles Berlanga (23-1, 18 KOs) in a WBC super middleweight title eliminator on Saturday, July 12th at the Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens, New York. Their fight will be the headliner on DAZN PPV.

Notably, two world champions are featured on the undercard. In other words, the fighters that likely will never capture belts and are seen as hype jobs by fans are in the main event, while the talented champions get undercard treatment.

This card presents an upside-down situation, sending a strong message that belts no longer matter. It’s now just about cheap entertainment. Sheeraz and Berlanga have a limited shelf life, being used as superficial entertainment because neither can beat top-rung competition.

Bradley believes that fighters who become millionaires early in their careers without winning world titles ever amount to anything. The ambition is gone, and we were never that good to begin with.

Berlanga (23-1, 18 KOs) is reportedly making a seven-figure purse for this fight. Sheeraz will likely be getting a similar amount, meaning they’ll be paid like world champions. Both failed when they attempted to win belts recently, showing limited ability.

Berlanga, Sheeraz: Millionaires Un-titled

“If Berlanga thinks Sheeraz is like the last guy he fought, I don’t think he’s like that. I don’t believe in either of these guys,” said Tim Bradley on his channel. “I have a hard time understanding guys that have become millionaires before they win a world championship. It don’t go well.”

It started with Canelo Alvarez cherry picking Berlanga by choosing him over the more deserving David Benavidez and David Morrell to defend against last September.

Berlanga got a massive $10 million payday for that fight, all without ever beating any quality contenders. He got the fight because he had a record built on fluff opposition, and he was popular in one small section of New York in Brooklyn.

Ryan Garcia: Instagram to Millions

“Look at Ryan Garcia. Tell me a fighter that becomes a millionaire before they become world champion, and they become something,” said Bradley.

Ryan Garcia’s popularity came from Instagram, and he transmuted that into a world title shot against Gervonta Davis, which was seen as a cherry pick by Tank. Garcia made millions from that fight, as well as his matches against Devin Haney and Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero.

“You’re going to have Sheeraz trying to keep his distance, moving left and right. He’s going to have to catch and time Berlanga on his way in. Use his height and his reach. Move your head. He’s standing straight up,” said Bradley.
