Jose Benavidez Sr. says he wants to train Jake Paul for his fight against Canelo Alvarez in May, and he’s not ruling out a win for the popular YouTuber turned-boxer.
Surprisingly, Jose Sr. didn’t sound bitter about Paul being the lucky person who is potentially fighting the superstar Canelo (62-2-2, 39 KO) because he’s been complaining forever about his son, ‘The Mexican Monster,’ David Benavidez, not getting the opportunity to face the superstar.
Revenge Plot?
Of course, volunteering to help Jake can be seen as Benavidez Sr’s way to get back at Canelo for ignoring his son all these years. Training Paul would be his way to get even with him while at the same time getting attention on himself as a popular coach. If Paul were to pull off a miracle upset under his watch, it would help raise Jose Sr’s credentials as a coach.
Canelo-Paul still isn’t a done deal yet, but the chances of the fight improved today with the news from The Ring about Canelo’s fight with Terence Crawford being off for September. If Alvarez has given up on that mini-mega fight, it increases the chances of Jake Paul getting the opportunity to face Canelo in May and maybe September.
With the kind of loot that a fight between Canelo and Jake Paul would rake in, two matches make sense as long as the first contest is competitive.
“I would be cheering for Jake because I know Jake, and he’s a great person. I would offer my services to train him over anything I could do to support him,” said Jose Benavidez Sr. to MillCity Boxing, volunteering to train Jake Paul to defeat Canelo Alvarez.
“That would be a good thing. One lucky punch [from Paul] or something. Who knows? We don’t know until we see that. Hopefully, we see the big progression that Jake is doing. He’s young, and strong. Anything is possible when you get inside. I’ll be cheering for him [to defeat Canelo],” said Benavidez Sr.
