Last season, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed Super Bowl-winning quarterback Russell Wilson to be their starting quarterback and traded for former first-round pick Justin Fields to be their backup.
Both had opportunities to start in 2024, with Wilson leading the Steelers to a 6-6 record (including their wild-card loss to the Baltimore Ravens) and Fields leading them to a 4-2 record.
With Wilson and Fields signing with the New York Giants and New York Jets, respectively, Pittsburgh is looking for their next starting quarterback, and four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers, who spent the last two seasons with the Jets, is considered the frontrunner for the job.
However, three weeks into the new league year, Rodgers is still unsigned, and the Steelers only have Skylar Thompson and Mason Rudolph in their quarterback room.
While speaking on his “Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger” podcast, former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger discussed the potential of Rodgers joining Pittsburgh this offseason.
“I think Aaron [Rodgers] is secretly still holding out for Minnesota—which is why he hasn’t signed with the Steelers,” Roethlisberger said. “Why else would you go throw with DK [Metcalf]and working out, and blast it to everybody that ‘I’m throwing to these guys,’ but you won’t sign?”

The Minnesota Vikings lost Sam Darnold to the Seattle Seahawks in free agency, and while they have 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy returning from a torn ACL and have been committed to the former Michigan Wolverine, general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has left the door open for Rodgers to finish his Brett Favre-esque journey and join the Vikings.
“For me to sit here and say that, you know, anything is 100 percent forever — that’s just not the job, right? We’re responding to scenarios and different information as it comes,” Adofo-Mensah recently said about Rodgers. “Obviously, things can change but right now we’re really happy with our room and we’re going to look to upgrade it in different ways. But for now, we’re really excited.”
Pittsburgh may have DK Metcalf and George Pickens, but Minnesota has better weapons with Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison and Rondale Moore as their top three wideouts, T.J. Hockenson at tight end and Aaron Jones at running back.
So, if the Steelers really want Rodgers, they’ll have to make it worth to him.
