It’s both an exciting and nerve-wracking time to be a fan of a bad NFL team, which the Chicago Bears were in 2024.

Last season, the Bears had the excitement of a number-one pick, which they used on quarterback Caleb Williams. Williams’ rookie season didn’t go as planned in many respects, but the Bears now have the chance to pair him with the right head coach to help him take off.

The Bears have interviewed 10 candidates as of Wednesday evening and requested interviews with seven more (per ESPN). The candidates range from former head coaches with over a decade of experience to former college coaches with no NFL coordinator experience.

Of all the candidates, though, who is the ideal choice to tutor Williams in year two?

Many have pointed to Ben Johnson, the offensive coordinator of the rival Detroit Lions, as the perfect fit for the Bears as a play-calling head coach. Nathan Kamal of Newsweek recently predicted that Johnson would indeed land in Chicago this winter.

“The Bears are looking to build a dynamic offense around quarterback Caleb Williams, and there’s no better candidate than Ben Johnson to lead that charge,” Kamal said.

“His success in Detroit, where he transformed an offense into one of the league’s best, makes him the perfect fit for Chicago’s rebuild. Expect Johnson to bring creativity and efficiency to the Bears’ offense.”

Johnson’s Detroit offenses have ranked top-five in both points and yards in all three of his seasons as coordinator, so all he knows as a play-caller is success. However, it’s worth pointing out that he’s had stellar offensive lines at his disposal, whereas the Bears will have to build theirs from the ground up.

The Bears have already interviewed Johnson via Zoom, and now the OC will focus on his pursuit of a Super Bowl with the Lions. We’ll see how long the Bears are willing to wait around for his decision, assuming they believe he’s truly the man for the job.
