Barcelona set to add stunning new ‘bicycle wheel’ feature to new Nou Camp as club look to build ‘world’s best stadium’

BARCELONA chiefs are planning an ambitious feature to make their stadium the envy of rivals around the world.

The Catalan giants have been playing home games away from the Nou Camp for more than two years.

They were originally meant to move back into the revamped ground last November but a string of delays have set them back.

While they are now close to phasing fans back in, club bosses have another trick up their sleeve which could force them back out again.

According to Sport, the Turkish company overseeing the renovation – Limak Construction – are calling on a specialised contractor to build a “horizontal bicycle wheel roof”.

Thick spokes will be installed to support an eye-catching structure, which is expected to resemble the roof on Atletico Madrid’s Metropolitano Stadium.

The roof will mark the very end of the £1.3BILLION project, and senior figures at the club are hoping to finish it by 2027.

It’s been said that “heads will roll” if it has to wait until 2028, given the delays they’ve already suffered.

Builders will reportedly need around four months – without fans – to install the framework for the roof.

So the team may once again be forced to up sticks for the end of the 2026/27 season and the start of the subsequent campaign while it’s put in place.

Supporters and players will hope the hassle has all been worth it once the 104,000-capacity stadium opens its doors.

At the start of the project, Barca president Joan Laporta promised it would put every other ground to shame.

The Barcelona board of directors visits the Spotify Camp Nou works

He said: “We will make the new Spotify Camp Nou the most secure, the most comfortable, the most commercial of course, and at the same time, the most exciting stadium in the world.

“Together, we will make it the best stadium in the world, at the level of the best club in the world, this Football Club Barcelona.”
