Teen sensation Sverre Nypan left Arsenal “shocked”by rejecting them for Man City.
The 18-year-old Norwegian midfielder is set to join City for £12.5m.
Journalist Graeme Bailey says: “It’s weird. Arsenal thought they got him.
“It was actually Villa who came on (strongest). Arsenal are a little bit shocked that City have ended up getting him. They thought City were out of it and felt they had beaten them to him.”
Hato ‘home’ at Ajax
Arsenal target Jorrel Hato has hinted he is willing to bide his time before a big-money move.
The left-footed defender, 19, is wanted by the Gunners and early stage talks with Ajax have begun.
Yet Hato seems happy in Amsterdam, saying: “Of course you want to achieve things in the end, the Champions League, a World Cup and a European Championship.
“I still have plenty of time. I don’t think I absolutely have to win the Champions League in two years.
“In the Dutch league you have to show how good you are against the big clubs. Ultimately, I have to continue to develop the things I am already good at, so that it becomes top.
“How do I describe my time at Ajax? Ajax is home for me. I just feel at home here.”

David Raya has boarded a flight to Las Vegas for his stag do.
He is set to marry model Tatiana Trouboul after getting down on one near a year ago.
The brunette beauty hails from Barcelona and the couple got matching light-bulb tattoos while on holiday in Ibiza in 2023.

The goalkeeper is gearing up for his wedding with model fiancee Tatiana Trouboul.
The Spain international proposed to Tatiana in October of last year and they are now set to marry.
And the Spain international has kicked off the wedding preparations with a bachelor party in Sin City.
Raya was joined by his brother Oscar as well as Spanish comedian Tomas Garcia Serrano.
A number of footballers also linked up with them including Getafe’s Diego Rico Salguero as well as Rayo Vallecano’s Adri Embarba and Unai Lopez.
All of them took to the streets of Vegas wearing Arsenal gear and taking group photos.
But before making it to the US, Raya was pictured dressed as an air stewardess during the flight.
The keeper appeared to be serving other passengers cookies on board the aircraft.
Arsenal reignite interest in youngster
Arsenal’s long-term interest in Jorrel Hato is heating up again, with fresh talks reportedly taking place between the Gunners and Ajax over a potential summer move for the highly-rated teenager.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal have reached out to Ajax again this summer to explore Hato’s availability. The left-footed defender, who played the majority of last season at left-back, is also highly regarded as a left-sided centre-back — a profile that fits perfectly with Mikel Arteta’s tactical vision.
Should Hato arrive in North London, it’s expected he would effectively replace Jakub Kiwior, who could be on his way to AC Milan, along with Oleksandr Zinchenko in a double deal that could see Arsenal earn around £50million.
Arsenal target wants to leave
Premier League duo Arsenal and Chelsea have seemingly been handed a boost in their pursuit of Liverpool-linked forward Joao Pedro.
Although Pedro still has three years remaining on his contract at the Amex Stadium, the Brazilian has made the decision to leave Brighton this summer and the Seagulls are aware of the situation, according to his teammate Igor Julio.
Speaking about Pedro’s future to Trivela, Igor said: “Joao Pedro had already told Brighton some time ago that his desire was to leave, seek new things, take the next step.
“It seems it will be difficult and complicated for him to stay here, we have to be honest, the club already knows that.”
“Very happy for him. He deserves it,” Igor added. “He’s been here in England for five years and hasn’t played for a big team yet. It’s his moment, his time, so he can make the best decision and be happy wherever he is.”
