Ange Postecoglou reveals how Tottenham offended him immediately after taking job as he clings on at Nottingham Forest

ANGE POSTECOGLOU defended his position as Forest boss with a five-minute monologue ahead of Saturday’s make-or-break clash with Chelsea.

It was not quite on the level of Rafa Benitez’s “fact” rant at Liverpool, or Eric Cantona’s “seagulls and trawler” speech.

But Postecoglou made his message as clear as day — after failing to win any of his first seven games in charge.

That record saw Forest fans turn on him after the Europa League home loss to Midtjylland earlier this month.

They chanted, “You’re getting sacked in the morning” after the Danish side scored a third goal.

That means every game is now potentially Postecoglou’s last at Forest — unless he gets the time to turn things around and deliver on his promise of a trophy.

The Aussie admitted he “doesn’t fit” wherever he has bossed so far, claiming he has been described as “a failed manager who was lucky to get another Prem job”.

But asked if he felt the pressure ahead of the upcoming City Ground clash, Postecoglou gave a 305-second answer.

His reply included a scathing analysis of what happened to him in N17 — and admitted Tottenham lost their final match of last season with Brighton because he had allowed them to go out “partying” after their Europa League triumph over Manchester United.

Postecoglou said: “I guess from my perspective, I just don’t fit. Not here, just in general.

“If you look at it through the prism of, ‘I’m a failed manager who’s lucky to get this job’ — then of course these first five weeks look like, ‘This guy’s under pressure’.

“But there is an alternative story that you can look at. I came to the Premier League two years ago, I took over Tottenham — ‘Spursy’ Tottenham. I was told by the chairman at the time that this club has to win a trophy.

“He said, ‘We’ve tried to bring winners in — [Jose] Mourinho and [Antonio] Conte — and it hasn’t worked, we need something different’.

“I was slightly offended by that because I see myself as a winner. I took over a Spurs that had finished eighth.

“A big club, with no European football. They couldn’t go two years without European football.

“We finished fifth my first year. I wish Harry Kane had stayed one more year, it would’ve been handy to have him.

“But somehow that year has disappeared from the record books.

“In fact, it was used as a reason for me losing my job because even Tottenham decided to exclude the first ten games — because they were an anomaly, apparently.

‘We won a trophy’

“I got them back into European football, which a club like Tottenham should be.

“We won a trophy. We shed the tag of being ‘Spursy’. It’s Champions League football, which brings some rewards and the opportunity to bring better players.”

Despite that success, Postecoglou feels he is judged on Tottenham’s league finish — 17th, just above the drop zone.

He added: “All I’ve heard since I’ve finished at Tottenham is that we finished 17th last year. So if you look at it from that prism, then, yeah, I’m a failed manager who’s lucky to get another opportunity.

Players ‘partied’

“But if I have to explain why we finished 17th, it doesn’t have to be too in-depth. Just have a look at the last five or six teamsheets of us in the league last year and see what I prioritised.

“The last game, against Brighton, the players were out partying for two days, which I sanctioned because I felt they deserved to.

“If people think 17th is a reflection of me and my coaching, then, again, I think they’re looking at it through the prism of,  ‘I just don’t fit’.

“But maybe I’m a manager that if you give them time, the story always ends the same — with me and a trophy.

“You can look at this first five weeks here and say, ‘He’s under pressure because he was lucky to get this job’.

“Or you can look at it and say, well, there’s been a major change here.
