Andre Onana sensationally called up to Afcon squad a week after axe as sacked Cameroon boss refuses to leave post

CHAOS continues to engulf Cameroon football as Andre Onana has been sensationally named in the nation’s 28-man AFCON squad, despite the coach who called him up being sacked last week.

Belgian manager Marc Brys, who was officially dismissed by the newly elected Fecafoot president Samuel Eto’o, insists he is still in charge and has announced his squad and preparatory programme for the tournament.

SunSport can confirm that Brys has included Onana in his list, just ahead of Thursday’s squad submission deadline.

The row stems from Brys being appointed by the Sports Ministry against the wishes of Eto’o, sparking a bitter power struggle that has already cost Cameroon a World Cup spot and now threatens their AFCON campaign.

Fecafoot, led by Eto’o, officially sacked Brys citing “subterfuge,” “professional failure,” and accusations of “inciting” players to defy the football federation.

There are further allegations of “active collaboration with unknown individuals within Fecafoot” levelled against the Belgian.

Despite the dismissal, Brys, who says the Ministry never formally informed him of his termination, insists he will continue his duties and named Onana in the squad.

One of Brys’ assistants, David Pagou, has been put forward by Fecafoot as interim head coach but the situation has caused major instability and uncertainty for the team ahead of the tournament.

The squad officially named by Pagou does not include Manchester United goalkeeper Onana.

Instead, it features local keeper Edouard Sombang of Colombe de Sangmelima, despite no league football being played there in the past six months.

Other big names, including Manchester United’s Bryan Mbeumo and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba are listed in both squads.

SunSport understands players are increasingly concerned about the ongoing chaos in Cameroon and the potential impact on their AFCON campaign.

With the AFCON deadline looming tomorrow, it remains to be seen whose squad will officially take to the field but for now, Andre Onana’s place in Cameroon’s tournament plans is confirmed by the man who refuses to leave his post.

At the time of writing, SunSport has been told the Cameroonian government and the football association were in a meeting to try and find an amicable solution.
