Canelo got irritated today when told that IBF super middleweight champion William Scull said that he’s slowed down late in his career, and he’s just getting by with his famous name. The Mexican star said that Scull (23-0, 9 KOs) is “going to feel what it’s like” to be inside the ring with him on Saturday night.

WBA, WBC, and WBO 168-lb champion Canelo (62-2-2, 39 KOs) will be fighting the unbeaten Scull for the undisputed super middleweight championship this Saturday, May 3rd, live on DAZN PPV at The Venue in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Alvarez wants to collect Scull’s IBF title from him so he can be a four-belt champion a second time and have the straps in his possession when he faces Terence Crawford in October.

Focused on Scull

“It’s one of my dreams to fight in another country, and now I’m close to doing it,” said Canelo Alvarez to Fight Hub TV about fighting in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, against William Scull this Saturday.  “I’ve watched some of his [Scull] fights. He’s a difficult fighter, but nothing new for me.”

Mexico native Canelo has technically already fought in another country, given his numerous fights in the U.S., but he doesn’t seem to view it as being in a separate region.

“I don’t have another fight in the future. I just have my fight against William Scull and that’s it. I’m 100% focused on that fight because I’ve already been in this position a lot,” said Canelo when asked if it’s difficult for him to stay focused on Scull when he’s got a big contest against Terence Crawford coming up in October.

It’s a good idea for Canelo NOT to look past Scull, because he’s been running out of gas after four rounds in his last few fights. If he fades early against Scull, the Cuban could out-hustle him in the last 7 to 9 rounds to win a decision.

Alvarez’s power remains elite, but his work rate drops off to near zero after the fourth round, allowing lesser fighters to win rounds. We saw that in Canelo’s last two fights against Edgar Berlanga and Jaime Munguia. Both of them are manufactured hype jobs, but they still won rounds because of 34-year-old Canelo slowing down.

“When I have a fight, they’re always asking me about another fight. Nothing new for me. The difference is another country because I’ve fought every style, every fight, and nothing new for me,” said Canelo on what his thoughts are about fighting the Cuban Scull.

Canelo has seen every style, but he can be outworked now. That’s what could be his undoing against Scull. The Cuban will work hard the entire fight, and he could potentially pull off an upset.

The Provocation

“My challenge right now is to adapt myself to this country [acclimate] and that’s it. I always train 100%. I like to be confident about my training camp. He’s going to feel on Saturday,” said Canelo when told that Scull said that he’s slowed down and is getting by with just his name late in his career.

“I don’t want to say much, but he’s going to feel something different on Saturday. You will see what [it’s like to] fight a great fighter on Saturday night. Just wait a little.

“I can play golf but he can’t play boxing,” said Canelo about Tiger Woods.
