Alpine reveals new all-electric rally car

Alpine has taken the covers off an all-new electric rally car that is set to make its competition debut before the end of the 2025 season.

The French manufacturer today revealed a rally version of its A290 road car, which is a performance-based derivative of the new Renault 5 electric vehicle.

The A290 Rallye is built to the FIA’s eRally5 regulations, devised in 2022 for cars largely based on two-wheel-drive production-spec models featuring a stock motor, inverter and battery.

Alpine has a rich history in rally with its A110 famously winning the inaugural World Rally Championship manufacturers’ title in 1973. The all-new A290 Rallye marks the brand’s 70th anniversary.

Alpine describes the A290 Rallye as a “gateway to electric competition” with a one-make single rally challenge in France planned for this year, before the car is expected to compete in open competition.

The A290 Rallye is powered by a 220 horsepower electric motor, which sends the power to the front axle with the help of a ZF limited-slip differential. The car also benefits from a specific suspension system fitted with ALP Racing Suspension shock absorbers.

Alpine says that the A290 Rallye will include an innovative system that will enable the car to emit a sound that correlates with the vehicle’s speed and throttle position.

The A290 Rallye is set to make its public debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed (10-13 July), and will also be present at Rallye Mont-Blanc Morzine (4-6 September). The price of the Alpine A290 Rallye is set at €59,990, excluding VAT, for the complete assembled and painted car.

News of Alpine’s A290 Rally machine comes just weeks after Opel launched its own FIA eRally5 prototype Mokka GSE Rally car.
