They call Alex Ovechkin ‘The Great 8.’
And the Washington Capitals’ legendary goalscorer has now reached the greatest 8s he ever could, in typical Ovechkin fashion.
Posted up in his “office” Thursday night, the left slot waiting to let a righty shot rip on goal, Ovechkin was sitting at 887 career goals, eight away from passing Wayne Gretzky to be the NHL’s top all-time goalscorer.
That magic number is now seven.
Ovechkin slid toward the goal for a relatively easy tap-in from the left side, giving him 888 career goals.
The Great 8 has 888.

If not for the much greater history that it’ll be to pass Gretzky, it’d almost be picture perfect for Ovechkin to stop right here.
No one thought any of Gretzky’s scoring records could ever be caught.Â
So for Ovechkin to reach 888 is history in its own right, even if 889 is likely just around the corner.
On this night, and for the rest of this journey, there’s no greater Capitals number than 8.
