Aaron Rodgers was a guest on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Thursday, and while many expected him to announce his decision, that did not end up happening.
Instead, the waiting game continues, as Rodgers admitted he’s more focused on his personal life at the moment than making a final decision on what he’s going to do this coming season. Rodgers also said retirement remains a possibility.
“I’m open to anything and attached to nothing. So, yeah, retirement still could be a possibility,” Rodgers explained to McAfee. “But right now my focus has been and will continue to be on my personal life.”
As the Rodgers saga drags on, Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon made predictions for where some big-named quarterbacks will land, and Gagnon pegged Rodgers for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
“Rodgers is probably drawing this out because that’s what he does, but those comments from key figures within the Steelers organization indicate they are pretty confident,” Gagnon said.
Considering Rodgers’ options appear to have dwindled down to just the Steelers and quite possibly the New Orleans Saints in the wake of the Derek Carr injury, going to Pittsburgh remains the most likely scenario if he doesn’t retire.
Rodgers met with the Steelers at their facility and had a throwing session with wide receiver DK Metcalf. The future Hall of Fame quarterback enjoyed his visit, and especially meeting with head coach Mike Tomlin.
“He’s more than I even thought from afar as far as the type of person he is. I have a lot of respect for what he’s accomplished in the league,” Rodgers said of Tomlin.
There was some thought that Rodgers might be waiting on the Minnesota Vikings and that’s why he hasn’t signed with the Steelers, but the four-time MVP dispelled that notion, also.
When asked about his contract demands, Rodgers said the estimates being floated out there for him (anywhere from $30-$45 million per year) are not accurate and he’s willing to play for $10 million.
That’s great news for the Steelers, who have $31.4 million in cap space. That means Pittsburgh can sign Rodgers and have plenty left over to further improve the roster in order to gear up for a playoff and possible Super Bowl push.
