Aaron Rodgers is still unsure what the future holds for his NFL career. He is still under contract with the Jets in 2025, but the franchise has a new head coach and GM coming in this offseason.
Rodgers knows he may not factor into New York’s short-term future with the overhaul. In his most recent weekly appearance with the Pat McAfee Show, the veteran quarterback said that he understands the process but also thinks it is “ridiculous” for a player of his caliber to “audition” to remain on the team.
Here is the latest on Rodgers’ outlook with the Jets in 2025.

Will Aaron Rodgers stay with the Jets?
When asked about the situation, Rodgers reiterated he wants to remain in New York, but added that the end of the season shouldn’t serve as an audition for a player with his history in the league.
“If they want me to stay, fantastic. If it takes these five games, maybe they don’t know what I bring to the table. But that being said, I’d love to play really frigging well the last five games.”
Rodgers and the Jets are 3-9 in third place in the AFC East. The Bills have locked down the division, but the Jets are still clinging to the chance of making the playoffs. They only have five more games left in the regular season, so they need a laundry list of very specific outcomes to get in since they do not control their own destiny. With how bleak a trip to the playoffs in 2024 looks, it is easy to see why the 41-year-old Rodgers is looking toward next year.
Rodgers has a $23.5 million cap hit for 2025, per Spotrac. When New York signed him, the team included void years to push his cap hit down the road. If the franchise were to cut him in the offseason, it would cost $49 million in dead cap. That figure can be absorbed by the team in full if it cuts him before June 1. If the team waits until after June 1, it can be spread over 2025 and 2026.
Rodgers has won the NFL MVP award four times in his career and is a future Hall of Famer. He isn’t playing at that level in 2024, though. Rodgers is in the midst of one of the worst statistical years of his career, but five games are left, so he can still improve his numbers.
Rodgers’ former teammate, A.J. Hawk, asked the QB after he hung up his cleats if he would follow in the paths of former quarterbacks Tony Romo and Tom Brady and head into the broadcast booth. Rodgers’ answer was long-winded as he joked with Hawk about asking a question he knows the answer to, but it was a very pointed “No.”

Rodgers is in the midst of one of his worst standalone seasons, and is also well short of his 17-game average over his career.
The Jets’ 2024 season hasn’t gone to plan, which can be said for Rodgers’ total tenure with the team. His 2023 campaign was wiped out after an Achilles tear in the season’s first game.
All of the hype leading up to that season was transferred to 2024. Despite the Jets’ slow start, that hype increased when New York re-united Rodgers with his former teammate Davante Adams. The duo has yet to be able to re-create the success they had for years in Green Bay.
Barring a massive turnaround, Rodgers — and Adams — will likely turn in disappointing years.
